Job Description:

Provide specialist cardiology clinical care, diagnostic services and clinical leadership across OPD, Emergency, Cardiac ICU, Cath Lab and inpatient ward settings. The Cardiologist will manage pre- and post-operative cardiac patients, perform and interpret echocardiography, lead and/or perform catheter-based CHD procedures, participate in multidisciplinary decision-making for surgical and catheter interventions, and contribute to training, clinical governance and quality improvement in line with ARCS and MoPH standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide expert clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired cardiac disease in OPD, Emergency, Cardiac ICU, Cath Lab and ward settings.

2. Deliver and supervise echocardiography services: perform and interpret transthoracic echo (TTE) for infants/children and adults as required; perform/interpret transesophageal echo (TEE) where competent; ensure timely reporting, image archiving and quality assurance of the echo service.

3. Perform and/or provide clinical leadership for catheter-based CHD interventions in the Cath Lab (e.g., device closures, balloon valvuloplasty, transcatheter PDA/ASD/VSD closures, stenting, diagnostic/therapeutic catheterizations) consistent with the hospital’s scope and safety protocols.

4. Lead multidisciplinary case planning (MDT) for complex CHD and interventional cases; coordinate with pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, ICU, nursing and biomedical teams.

5. Provide on-call cardiology and cath-lab clinical coverage as scheduled, including emergency catheter interventions and intra-operative/ peri-procedural support.

6. Ensure adherence to Cath Lab safety standards: radiation safety, contrast/renal protection protocols, vascular access management, sedation/anesthesia coordination and post-procedure monitoring.

7. Supervise and mentor echo technicians, cath-lab technologists, junior cardiologists and trainees; provide structured teaching, supervised procedural training and competency sign-off.

8. Develop, implement and audit clinical protocols and peri-procedural pathways for echo, cath lab and perioperative cardiology care (including anticoagulation, device follow-up, and infection prevention).

9. Maintain accurate procedural records, operative notes and cath lab logbooks; report clinical indicators and contribute to morbidity & mortality reviews and quality improvement projects.

10. Advise procurement on echocardiography, cath lab equipment and consumables specifications; ensure proper maintenance and calibration coordination with biomedical engineering.

11. Participate in referral liaison and clinical meetings to strengthen service integration.

12. Perform additional duties assigned by the Hospital Director related to cardiology and interventional services.

Job Requirements:

1. Medical Degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) with postgraduate specialty qualification in Cardiology (e.g., MD Cardiology, FCPS Cardiology, or equivalent).

2. Fellowship/Certification in Interventional Cardiology or Pediatric Interventional Cardiology (formal fellowship or equivalent supervised experience). If the post focuses on pediatric CHD interventions, a Pediatric Cardiology fellowship with interventional experience is strongly preferred.

3. Demonstrable competence in echocardiography (TTE required); certification or documented training in pediatric TTE/TEE is preferred.

4. Current registration with the Afghan Medical Council (AMC) or eligibility for registration; valid medical license.

Work Experience:

1. Minimum 2-3 years post-specialty clinical experience in cardiology, including acute inpatient and ICU experience. For interventional role: minimum 1-2 years supervised interventional practice (post-fellowship) in CHD or structural heart interventions.

2. Documented experience performing pediatric/adult echo and a proven procedural log of catheter interventions appropriate for the hospital’s case mix (device closures, balloon dilatations, diagnostic caths).

Experience in multidisciplinary cardiac teams, perioperative care and clinical governance; teaching and supervisory experience desirable.
