•    Supervises: OT technicians, junior theatre nurses, ward-based perioperative nursing staff (as assigned)

Primary purpose:
Provide specialized perioperative nursing for pediatric cardiac surgery lists as scrub or circulating nurse: prepare and maintain a sterile surgical environment, support the surgical and perfusion teams (including CPB cases), ensure patient safety and theatre efficiency, and contribute to training, IPC and quality improvement.

Key responsibilities
1.    Act as scrub nurse: prepare sterile instrument trays, maintain the sterile field, anticipate surgeon needs, pass instruments/sutures and perform accurate instrument/needle counts and implant documentation.
2.    Act as circulating nurse: manage the non-sterile field, coordinate supplies/staff flow, communicate with wards/ICU, prepare patients for transfer and complete intraoperative documentation and handover.
3.    Verify theatre readiness for each cardiac case: check CPB disposables, warming devices, pacing equipment, suction/monitoring and ensure availability/expiry verification of implants and blood products.
4.    Ensure implant/device traceability: verify device identity at time of use, record serial/batch numbers, reconcile unused implants and complete implant logs per policy.
5.    Support cardiopulmonary bypass workflow: prepare CPB disposables, coordinate sterile boundaries with perfusionists and assist with priming and circuit management as directed.
6.    Lead or support emergency theatre response: assist rapid mobilisation for re-exploration, massive transfusion or cardiac arrest and prepare patients for safe transfer to ICU.
7.    Maintain theatre stock, instrument sets and equipment checks: restock consumables, monitor expiries, perform shift equipment checks and report faults to Biomedical/OT coordination.
8.    Participate in quality & safety activities: perform time-outs, complete checklists, contribute to M&M and IPC audits, and implement corrective actions for theatre efficiency and infection prevention.
9.    Train and mentor junior theatre staff in asepsis, instrumentation, counts and perioperative safety; keep a personal log of procedures and implant handling as required.
10.    Adhere to occupational health, PPE, sharps and radiation safety procedures; maintain English clinical documentation for HMIS/audit and communicate with families in local languages when needed.

Required Qualifications:
Mandatory:
•    Registered Nurse (RN) with valid nursing licence/registration in Afghanistan.
•    Degree in Nursing (BSc Nursing).
•    Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
Preferred:
•    Post-basic certificate in Perioperative/Theatre Nursing, Critical Care or Cardiac Nursing.
•    ACLS and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
•    Prior experience in cardiac or paediatric cardiac OTs.

Minimum experience
•    Minimum 3–5 years clinical nursing experience in hospital settings; at least 24-36 months of operating theatre experience required.
•    Documented minimum 12 months experience in cardiac or cardiothoracic theatre desirable; neonatal/pediatric cardiac OT exposure preferred.
