•    Supervises: Theatre assistants and scrub nurses when assigned; provides clinical guidance to junior trainees during operations.

Primary purpose:
Provide competent, hands-on intraoperative assistance to cardiac surgeons: perform surgical assisting tasks (exposure, tissue handling, suture management, cannulation assistance), support perioperative patient safety and theatre efficiency, and participate in emergency re-explorations and postoperative surgical care under the surgeon’s supervision.

Key responsibilities
1.    Serve as first/second assistant for elective and emergency cardiac surgeries within granted privileges, providing exposure, retraction, suctioning and suture/needle handling.
2.    Assist with cardiopulmonary bypass cannulation and decannulation, hemostasis and immediate intraoperative bleeding control under the supervising surgeon’s direction.
3.    Perform defined technical tasks (chest-tube placement, temporary pacing wire insertion, sternal closure, device/implant verification) and verify implant/instrument accountability.
4.    Lead or support safe patient transfer and structured handover to ICU; participate in post-operative rounds and surgical follow-up as required.
5.    Respond to on-call emergency re-explorations (mediastinal bleed, tamponade, airway compromise) and urgent operative complications per roster and escalation pathways.
6.    Maintain accurate operative records and personal logbook (assistant role, cases, implants); sign instrument/implant logs where authorised and complete theatre documentation for HMIS/audit.
7.    Train and mentor junior doctors and theatre staff in assisting techniques, sterile practice, instrumentation and intraoperative safety.
8.    Contribute to surgical quality activities: participate in M&M reviews, audits and corrective-action implementation; report equipment faults and consumable shortages to OT coordination/biomedical teams.
9.    Support theatre efficiency and safety: assist with pre-op checklist completion, participate in briefings/debriefings, and help maintain on-time starts and turnover readiness.
10.    Adhere strictly to PPE, sharps safety, IPC and radiation safety policies; follow hospital policies on blood/body-fluid exposure and waste handling.

Required Qualifications:
Mandatory:
•    Medical degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent) with valid AMC registration.
•    Evidence of basic surgical training (internship + supervised surgical rotations).
Preferred:
•    Postgraduate surgical training or diploma (General Surgery / Cardiothoracic module) OR documented supervised experience as a surgical assistant in cardiac/thoracic surgery.
•    ACLS and ATLS (or equivalent) certification.
•    Prior experience in paediatric/cardiac operating theatres desirable.

•    3–5 years clinical experience post-qualification with at least 24–36 months operating theatre exposure; preference for documented experience assisting cardiothoracic operations or working in high-acuity surgical environments.
•    Operative logbook entries showing role (first/second assistant) desirable.
