Primary purpose:
Perform and supervise clinical laboratory testing (biochemistry, hematology, blood-bank liaison, microbiology basics, and point-of-care tests) to provide accurate, timely diagnostic support for perioperative, ICU and ward care of pediatric cardiac patients, ensuring quality control, sample traceability and compliance with lab safety standards.
Key responsibilities:
1.    Receive, register and prioritise specimens: verify patient identity, correct labelling, sample integrity and urgent status before processing.
2.    Perform routine and urgent tests required by the cardiac service: CBC/blood film, PT/INR/aPTT, blood grouping and crossmatch liaison, electrolytes/renal/liver panels, ABG/blood gas analysis and other agreed chemistry/haematology tests.
3.    Operate and maintain analysers and POCT devices: perform start-up checks, calibrations, basic troubleshooting and daily preventive maintenance checks; escalate complex faults to Biomedical Engineering or vendors.
4.    Execute and document quality-control procedures: run internal QC, record results, participate in external quality assessment/proficiency testing (EQA) and investigate non-conformances with corrective actions.
5.    Ensure timely communication of critical and urgent results to clinical teams (ICU, OT, Cath Lab) using defined escalation pathways and document acknowledgements.
6.    Maintain full traceability and documentation: test records, reagent lot/expiry logs, equipment maintenance logs, temperature logs (cold-chain), and HMIS/LIS entries in English for audit and reporting.
7.    Manage inventory and reagent cold-chain: monitor stock levels, forecast consumables, rotate stock, report expiries and submit timely procurement requests.
8.    Supervise and train junior lab staff and phlebotomists: maintain competency records, mentor staff on specimen collection, processing, POCT and safety procedures.
9.    Liaise with Blood Bank and clinical teams: coordinate crossmatches, ensure blood availability for scheduled lists, and maintain device/kit traceability for transfusion-related items.
10.    Enforce biosafety and laboratory safety practices: safe handling/disposal of infectious specimens and sharps, adherence to HBV vaccination policy, participation in lab audits and on-call/shift rota to support urgent OT/ICU testing needs.

Required Qualifications:
Mandatory:
•    Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Technology / Medical Laboratory Science (BMLT / BSc MLT) 
•    Current professional registration / license.
•    Basic Life Support (BLS) desirable.
Preferred:
•    Advanced training/certificates in clinical biochemistry, haematology, blood transfusion technology or point-of-care testing.
•    Experience in hospital laboratories with cardiac/ICU perioperative testing or blood-bank liaison.

•    Minimum 3 years clinical laboratory experience in a hospital setting; at least 18-24 months experience performing routine and urgent tests in hematology / biochemistry / coagulation / ABG preferred.
