Primary purpose:
Provide specialist neonatal and pediatric medical care with emphasis on perioperative and post-operative management of cardiac patients: deliver safe NICU/ward/OPD care, lead neonatal resuscitation and stabilization, support multidisciplinary perioperative planning, and contribute to clinical governance, training and quality improvement.

Key responsibilities:
1. Clinical care: Provide specialist assessment, stabilization and ongoing medical management of neonates, infants and children across OPD, NICU/PCICU and wards, including emergency consults and perioperative patients.
2. NICU/PCICU management: Lead ventilator strategy, invasive monitoring, fluid/electrolyte and TPN management, central/arterial line placement oversight and daily ICU rounds for neonatal/infant cardiac patients.
3. Perioperative optimization: Perform pre-op risk assessment and medical optimization for children scheduled for cardiac surgery; coordinate timing and risk-reduction plans with cardiology, surgery, anesthesia and ICU.
4. Resuscitation & emergency response: Lead neonatal resuscitation (NRP) and pediatric advanced life-support (PALS/APLS) responses; train staff, run simulations and certify competency.
5. Post-op complications & escalation: Manage common postoperative medical problems (respiratory failure, low cardiac output, arrhythmias, sepsis, metabolic issues); provide first-line treatment and escalate to specialist teams per protocol.
6. Training & supervision: Supervise, mentor and assess junior doctors and nurses; provide bedside teaching, structured training sessions and competency sign-offs.
7. Protocols, quality & infection control: Develop/implement NICU/pediatric clinical protocols (line/ventilation bundles, sepsis pathways, feeding); participate in M&M, audits and CQI activities and monitor key indicators.
8. Equipment & maintenance advice: Advise on procurement/specifications for neonatal/pediatric equipment (ventilators, incubators, infusion/TPN sets, warming devices) and coordinate preventive maintenance priorities with Biomedical Engineering.
9. Documentation & MDT coordination: Ensure timely, accurate HMIS/NICU records and handovers in English; participate in multidisciplinary meetings, discharge planning and family counselling.
10. On-call & referral coordination: Participate in the hospital on-call rota for neonatal/pediatric emergencies, stabilize and coordinate transfers or regional retrievals as needed.

Required Qualification:
Mandatory:
• Medical degree (MBBS/MD or equivalent).
• Postgraduate qualification in Pediatrics (MD/FCPS or equivalent).
• Current medical registration with Afghan Medical Council (AMC) or eligibility; valid medical license.
• Two professional references and certified copies of degree, specialist certificate and current license.
Preferred:
• Fellowship/formal training in Neonatology or significant NICU experience.
• Training/experience in perioperative pediatrics, neonatal cardiac physiology or pediatric critical care.
• Current NRP and PALS/APLS certification; experience with ventilated neonates and complex perioperative pediatric cases.

Minimum experience
• Minimum 4–5 years post-specialty clinical experience in pediatrics; for the Neonatologist-designated post at least 2–3 years focused NICU/neonatology practice is preferred.
• Documented recent experience managing ventilated neonates/infants and complex perioperative pediatric patients.
