35 Psychiatric Patients Reintegrated with Their Families Following Comprehensive Treatment and Recovery!

Today, Sunday, May 11th, 35 psychiatric patients, 18 men and 17 women, who had been receiving treatment and care at Kabul Mental Health Treatment and Care Center under the Health Directorate of ARCS, were discharged and reintegrated with their families. 

The ceremony was held in the presence of Sheikh Hadith Shahabuddin Delawar, the Acting General President of ARCS, Hafiz Azizur Rahman, the Vice President, Mawlawi Rohullah Abdul Salaam, the Acting Secretary General, Mr. Milan Gezdawek, the Acting Head of IFRC in Afghanistan, the delegations and several other senior officials.

During the event, the Acting General President was happy with the successful recovery of the patients and extended congratulations both to the recovered individuals and their families. 

In his remarks, Mr. Delawar stated that the root causes of psychiatric disorders are prolonged crises and persistent hardships.

He noted, “To address these challenges, ARCS has appointed specialized medical specialists and staff to provide improved care and treatment of patients in all its mental health treatment and care centers. 

They are dedicated to providing comprehensive services including medication, food, drink, clothing, hygiene, and continuous efforts for the patients’ well-being.”

Following him, the Acting Head of IFRC commended the efforts of ARCS in the treatment and care of psychiatric patients.

He also announced that the Director of Asia-Pacific regional office of the IFRC pledged to allocate 100,000 Swiss Francs from its own budget to support the healthcare services of women’s mental health treatment center in Kandahar Province, and affirmed to extend further assistance in this regard.

During the gathering, Dr. Abdulwali Otmanzai, Director of the ARCS Central Hospital, provided a detailed briefing on mental health services across several provinces including Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarhar, Balkh, Herat, and Kunduz. He reported that 916 individuals are currently receiving healthcare services at psychiatric centers, while 4,568 are receiving home-based services, including the provision of necessary medications provided by healthcare staff.

Furthermore, on behalf of all recovered psychiatric patients, three of these individuals expressed gratitude to the ARCS in Pashto, Dari, and English for its unwavering support. They also appealed to philanthropic individuals and humanitarian organizations to continue their assistance with ARCS.

It it noteworthy that each of the recovered patient was granted 5,000 AFN, clothing, sandals, and other essential items to support their immediate livelihood needs.
